Europe: Stories of Love and Hate

Europe: Stories of Love and Hate

Fifth edition of Story-Line, 26 March in Lumiere Cinema Maastricht

Literature, film, journalism and Spoken Word: on Tuesday 26 March no politicians, but storytellers about Europe.

Scholar and writer on European Affairs, Mathieu Segers (Maastricht), talks to the Italian, best-selling author, Francesca Melandri (Rome), about Italy and its dark colonial past. He will also speak with Dutch writer, Lodewijk van Oord (Maastricht), who recently published a novel about the complicated relation of Europeans with Africa.

Film critic, Dana Linssen (Amsterdam), will give a mini-lecture about the role of Europe in contemporary films, and will interview Dutch-Bosnian film maker, Ena Sendijarevic (Amsterdam/Berlijn), showing clips of her films. They will discuss questions like: What does it mean to be ‘European’? What is home?

Spoken Word artist, Samira Saleh (Brussel), will perform, with poems about Europe, written for this event.

The Dutch media collective Are We Europe, founded by and for young Europeans, will show their project ‘Edges of Europe’ in the foyer of Lumiere Cinema. Young people from countries on the edges of Europe recount their lives.

The event is in English.
